Black Bird


Habitat : tropical forest to desert.

Diet mainly insects and worms. Most species take fruit, some take larger animal prey such as lizards and frogs.

Breeding 2-6 eggs ; incubated for 12-15 days.

Size : smallest, from length 11cm, weight 8g; largest (bluebirds); upto length 33cm, weight 220g.

Plumage : Most species grey, brown or black Females duller than males.


Where is black bird commonly found ?

The European blackbird is a member of the THRUSH family, which races in Asia and North Africa. A bird of hedgerows and thickets, it is also common in gardens and on the farms. There are about 60 species and they include the familiar Song thrush and blackbird of Europe. nearly every country except Australia has its own local garden thrush. The male is 25cm long, has a yellow bill and a glossy black plumage. The female is browner, with a brown bill and a speckled breast.

Many of the true thrushes are renowned for their beautiful songs. The blackbird is best known for its rattle like alarm note which also serves a warning to other birds that a predator is around.

The female builds a nest, strengthened with a layer of mud and lined with fine strands of grass. They feed together in flocks.
